Abdullatif M. Al Shamsi

So, a case for Inspector Holmes? Or just some rather old news about that swindling Shamsi fellow ... ?

Either way, a former HCT inmate provides some fine  words of wisdom regarding a possible career move to the Evil Empire.

***

After having wasted nine years of my life working for the rancid dirham, my first few words of advice for any would-be recruit to the gulags of HCT are: take extreme care! In fact, I have a simple cautionary tale for anyone who wishes to climb the greasy management pole at HCT. We are all aware of teachers who have been dismissed without notice on a mere whim, and I have personally seen the kapos get whacked - it's part of the routine at HCT.  Yet I would never have expected the Commandant to literally disappear overnight! But yes, former CEO Al Shamsi was squeezed out like an unwanted herpes scab after the Summer break last year, and, with as little fanfare as possible, a new Sturmbahnfuhrer was ushered in. The king is dead – long live the king!

Of course, for most bold, energetic and forward thinking Higher Educational Institutions, one might have expected a brief 'hand-over' period, at least a "thank you for all you have done, our CEO is now moving on, we are grateful etc.," or even a whip round from the tea boat. And yet, in this case, there was - nada, zilch, diddly squat, sweet FA. So what happened?

All of the above has been shrouded in great secrecy, deep mystery and a good dose of "we don't talk about this and neither should you unless you want to find yourself on the next flight home" so loved by HCT. Umpteen rumours abound, ranging from the Minister for Education sacking him on the spot for getting his fat fingers trapped in the proverbial, not reporting someone else's fat fingers getting caught in the same, for paying homage to Mr Wasta and facilitating nepotism, and for … well, goodness  only knows what.

What is clear here is that, whatever exactly happened, it will forever be shielded from us mere inmates. It’s just another case of khalas, move along there, nothing to see here, stop loitering, etc. Of course, the lesson that they want everybody to learn is that they can ‘disappear’ anyone - from the lowliest janitor to the CEO - at the click of a finger. Unsurprising for this part of the world (i.e., the uncivilized part), the case makes it absolutely crystal clear that there is never any accountability, no due process or labour rights that one might expect in the West. Because when the Big Daddy wants you out, you are OUT!

In short, the above matter should serve as a salutary warning to anyone who might be wishing to chance things here. In particular, for those thinking they could forge a successful career at HCT!

Oh shit! I was so looking forward to a glittering career in academic management there.
I guess China will have to do instead .

It’s surprising that slippery Shamsi’s Wikipedia pages make no mention of his sudden enforced exit from HCT. I reckon somebody should put that right soon1

HCT Sharjah
New management has done all it can to erase whatever good will staff and faculty may have had with the introduction of policies and procedures that strike at the heart of reciprocal, trusting relationships.
Among these include the introduction of biometric clock-in/clock-out and the counting of hours, campus-wide CCTV, redefining existing contracts to increase faculty teaching load, forced overtime, and the impossible demand that all degrees - including high school certificates - be attested by state and national governments as a condition for continued employment.
This year onerous exam rules were implemented forcing faculty to submit grades within 48 hours, in addition to requiring an ad-hoc committee to review all A and F marks, after which a majority of grades were "normalized" by administrative authorities without consultation of relevant faculty.
Communication from management is perfunctory, threatening, and often has to be clarified by an additional chain of grammatically and orthographically challenged messages. Management talks about seeking the opinion of stakeholders, but has never held any discussions with faculty.
Large numbers of faculty have not had contracts renewed, others have been threatened with termination, and many are hoping to leave as soon as possible.
Stay away.
Stay away.
STAY AWAY!

Oh wow, let me tell you what an absolutely amazing experience it was spending time at HCT. I mean, who wouldn't want to be a part of such a delightful place? It's like a magical wonderland where your dreams go to die! Trust me, it's the pinnacle of self-respect and career advancement.

Oh, Abdulatif Alshamsi, what a gem! People who once despised him are now begging for his return! I can't even comprehend the genius move of replacing him with the absolute catastrophe that's currently in charge. Truly, a stroke of brilliance! Words fail to do justice to this walking disaster.

So, if you have any sense left in your soul, and you value your sanity, make sure to rush right into the warm embrace of HCT. It's like a warm hug from a pit of snakes. Students, especially, should be running towards this place, like it's the best decision they'll ever make in their lives! Who needs sanity and happiness when you have HCT?

Whoooaaaah! So he’s an “absolute disaster” and a “walking catastrophe”, to misquote heavily.
Please provide a few examples, my dear informant. We’re all waiting in anxious expectation!

Suede, there are very FEW examples of intelligent life left at HCT now. The previous regime did its very best to remove all features of intelligence from HCT management through its Emiratisation program, and the current establishment is working damned hard to root it out from its remaining nooks and crannies in other areas. HCT will be a ‘zombie college’ very soon, if not already.
