And I was beginning to think that things might have been starting to improve. Was the voice over done by google translate? Maybe the students were right to complain about the lack of English in the classroom?

Since when have things started to improve at HCT? I cannot think of any single improvement here in the last ten years or so!

I worked in HCT before and it was hard. I left quickly. I dont know why students come to this college. They learn nothing and the admin doesnt care, they want them to be in the premises. Hey students find somewhere else to study, it is wasting of time. Dept chairs were appointed only for political reasons, most of them are dumb.

I advice my colleagues to leave this awful place, u are killing ur career.

Thanx

When you think about it, the wholeHCT setup is a complete confidence trick. The local students don’t study, the foreign teachers don’t have the chance to teach properly, and the Emirati management have no skills at all. This whole thing is a pointless charade, a shambles, and quite why it continues is a real mystery - unless, of course, it is designed to keep the dozy Emiratis occupied.
Could that POSSIBLY be the real reason?

To anon above, I would say that it is definitely the real reason, plus of course the fact that nobody really cares. I mean, what do you do with so many thousands of uneducatable adoloscents and unemployable young people? Send them all to college! It stops then hanging around the streets with nothing to do and having ‘inappropriate’ thoughts.

The HCT colleges are just a dumping ground for the nation's spoilt and stupid teenagers. Local kids with real brains study at one of the UAE's universities, while it's just the dross who fill the classrooms of HCT.
If you are a teacher and are thinking of applying for a job there, DON'T! Just don't!!

There’s a strong rumor doing the rounds here that HCT will be laid to rest soon and disappear, to be revived in another format (no doubt equally toxic and despicable). Anybody can corroborate that?

Suede Oasis said...

I don’t know much about HCT being ‘laid to rest’, but most observers believe that The Beast will be run into the ground by its leaders. And quite frankly, it will be no shame - and not before time, either.

Strong rumours abound regarding massive sackings and ‘relocations’ this coming week or two. If you’re an HCT inmate and planning on taking your holidays soon, be prepared to make radical changes to your future plans.

Most likely scenario, IMHO, is that HCT will be sold to a private company. I bet GEMS, or the like, wouldn’t mind adding it to it’s portfolio. The gov will then subsidize the national students tuition and others will pay if they’re naive enough to think they can get a real education. Salaries will shrink as the new owners chase the lowest price highest profit.

GEMS would be totally out of their depth, although that would not stop them making a play for HCT. The quality of teaching in their high schools is mediocre at best, and they prefer to ‘teach to the test’ and enforce endless assessments and exams on their unfortunate pupils. ‘Depth of learning’ is not a phrase that they understand at all, and the thought of an Indian GEMS teacher being put in charge of a research paper fills with me with total dread!

Any news on those ‘relocations’ and terminations that I mentioned above? Everything seems to have gone quiet, according to my sources...

Lots of both.

In that case, please send me details of HCT's latest 'bloodbaths'. There should be enough of the claret stuff to fill a swimming pool, I reckon!
My email is, as ever, suede.oasis@yahoo.com.
I look forward to receiving dispatches (despatches?) very soon, comrades!

"If there were a special Olympics for academia, HCT would not be rigorous enough to qualify."

Our employment contract wording now is that it is a “three-year contract with annual renewal”. What it means is that even having been renewed, no one is safe from termination during the duration of the contract. We had several people being renewed last year and then told in April that they are no longer needed comes July 4. We are now given only two windows to resign: tell the management prior to Dec 28 of resignation as of July (end of Summer 1), and by May 28 for a resignation as of December 24, making it impossible to get another job prior to resignation from the HCT unless we give up our end-of-service gratuity. We also no longer get money for that last ticket home -only the actual ticket which cannot be returned or exchanged.

I'm out! I left and I am NEVER going back to the hell hole of HCT! To think that I wasted three years of my career there, trying to teach at a fake education institution - it almost broke my heart and shredded my nerves.
I'm sending a full account to Suede. Hopefully he will publish it soon and help tdeliver another nail in the coffin of that goddam awful place!

@Tina Only those who cannot get a job because of their poor academic credentials fo to that Camel dung pit called HCT. You must be one and Suede Oasis must be another. Work hard to get a PhD,so that you never go to another cesspit. As for Suede Oasis,he was such a lazy wastrel that even that Camel dung pit could not have him anymore and kicked him out.

@Delma: "I cannot think of any single improvement here in the last ten years or so!" You have stayed so long in this Arab quagmire. Your qualifications must be really very poor to seek this place ten years ago!

Hey guys, look who’s back! It’s Sanjay the Subtle, the man with the doctorate in Repetition and Tedium!
We look forward to your insightful and ground-breaking comments more than ever!
So where have you been, Sanjay? Helping your Dad back in the store again? Maybe your PhD was in Retail Management, eh?!

BTW, Suede is happy to report that he has indeed received the report from ‘Tina’, as mentioned above, and will be publishing it in full very soon.

We look forward to reading that one, Suede!
