HCT Job Alert!

Looking for a teaching position at HCT? If so, you may well have seen the following advertisement.

Faculty members are responsible for providing effective instruction in English Foreign Language (EFL) at all levels, from beginner to advanced. Emphasis is placed on Aviation industry specific vocabulary terms, speaking and listening are emphasized as that is the mode of communication mostly utilized by pilots.
The position is for the Khalifa Bin Zayed Air College in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.

However, you really need to be aware of the following item of information too:

Anybody thinking about applying for one these HCT jobs at Khalifa Air College is seriously advised to think again.

The long and the short of it is that the department has been in an increasing state of disarray ever since a certain Amy Subaey took over as Supervisor of the HCT Military Languages Programme in Aug 2011. Within a few weeks of her appointment, she had totally antagonised her whole teaching team - an antagonism which from the word go was intense, instantaneous and uniform across the whole teaching team. As the year progressed, the feeling went from bad to worse: she brooked no opposition, and by the end of the year (June 2012) she terminated the contracts of SIX long standing teachers with good track records at HCT (i.e. half the teaching team).

The department has been short staffed for the last six months, with the result that classes get doubled up, or just don't get taught, and two teachers have been absent for substantial periods over the past term, undergoing treatment for clinical depression. Most of those who have been recruited on casual contracts are getting out as fast as they can go, and those who are there on regular HCT contracts are mostly trying to get transfers to other HCT departments.

The chances of any improvement in the situation are pretty slim as student numbers are set to rise again in March, but they haven't even got enough teachers to cover the existing classes.

One could go on for ever about this woman. One big complaint was the disgraceful way in which she conducted the PEP evaluations last academic year, walking into classrooms unannounced for maybe 10 mins at a time, with neither pre-observation nor post-observation discussion, then writing up a series of half-truths and subjective value judgements at the end of it all.

One teacher even got assessed on the basis of a class that he had been asked to take at less than 1 hrs notice, substituting for an absent teacher, and using the material that the absent teacher had asked him to teach. Would you believe, he signed his agreement at the end of the report - and got to keep his job.

Any who didn't sign had their contracts terminated - and 5 of them out of 6 were males. That's important, as she is clearly a male-hater. In her personal blog she proudly announces herself as a 'single mom', and it's easy to imagine why.

The staff who are still there are scared stiff to say or do anything for fear that they too might lose their jobs. Clearly it's a place to avoid, and no decent teacher would want to work under such a self-deluding tyrant.

Amy is psychotic (with a dash of catatonia), paranoid, incompetent, arrogant, evil etc., etc. She practically 'delegates' all her work to the already 'stretched to breaking point' team, making the journey to KBZAC rarely, she is already PNG at the naval base; one of her erstwhile responsibilities! HRH prefers to send bloated, abstruse, patronising and contradictory diktats via email. God forbid that she ever teaches a class! That would be far too taxing for her! Her teaching 'skills' when put into practice for a few minutes on the odd occasion, has left a lot to be desired.
Due to the constant bullying (which Captain Bligh would be mighty proud of!) by the 'wicked witch (the 'w' in the second word should be pronounced as 'b') and the abuse of her post, obviously those who need this job to look after their families would be put under an inordinate strain. Earlier this year teachers were forced to teach 2 classes SIMULTANEOUSLY!

Anyway! Once upon a time the KBZAC gig was a dream. Nice hours (home by c. 13:00, 06:30 start;- Amy has a deluded notion that somehow the staff at KBZAC are 'part-timers!), loads of time off, good salary, esprit de corps etc. etc. then the 'wicked (b)witch' parked her broomstick on the runway.

Contributing openly on atheist/agnostic blogs and not even bothering to hide her identity, in a clear and open breach of HCT guidelines and policies, is another (she doesn't just torture teachers!) of her favourite pastimes. She also proudly proclaims on her own blog that she 'left' (read: 'did a runner on') her other half soon after her daughter was born! What a catch!

Sunday 18th Nov. was a crucial day, being the penultimate day of the final exams, as well as the designated (by her) day for an important staff meeting to 'plan ahead' for the new academic year in January 2013. Guess what meeting cancelled and HRH doesn't turn up! Surprise, surprise! Perhaps she couldn't face the staff whose livelihoods she had wrecked, causing distress to them and their families in the process? Then again, which is probably the case, as last weekend was a 3-day one, the w(b)w went hiking. Probably she was just plain too tired/lazy to come to a 'silly little meeting'! However, staff have been known to be harassed by text and emails from her whilst they were ill, because unless one is dead (or near enough) they should still be able to do theirs and her work!

Ultimately the blame lies with HCT, how can they allow such a modus operandi? Another of the w(b)w's lovely and awe-inspiring character traits is her propensity for lying through her back teeth! Thankfully an investigation is now (finally!) underway by HCT. However, this is way too late for those who have lost their jobs and have had their reputations tarnished by a genuinely malignant, conceited, despotic, narcissistic and hubris-ridden being.

HCT does not always hire such monsters, but actually creates a fair number of them. It's the ultimate monster that has started to consume itself. Go take a look on punchinthefacebook.com, and you'll see that more than half of the crooks and incompetents on there come from HCT!

I was on the staff at KBZAC from Sept 11 to June 12, and I am not one of the group who were terminated – my contract came to a natural end - so I have no disgruntled axe to grind.

When I started in Sept 2011, I saw no evidence of a ‘program [that] had turned into a complete disaster’. On the contrary, I found a team that was working well together, and making the best of a programme that had changed three times in three years. The ‘terrible mess’ did not come till later, especially after the capable Co-ordinator of the past 5 yrs was unceremoniously removed from her job in June 2012. This Co-ordinator, for example, regularly spent large chunks of her weekend making up a timetable that would fit in with the vagaries of the Air Force schedule for the following week – and still managed to keep up a full teaching load during the week – often teaching double classes, because the department was short staffed. Yet, after her departure, it took two teachers to do the same job, and each with only a part time teaching load.

The metaphor of the new broom coming in to sweep out the lazy old guard sounds good, but it is a myth. The reality is that there was no old guard – or only three, to be precise – and ironically, two of those were retained – both of them female. The rest of us were all new and it was four of our new guard who got "swept out" – curiously ALL males – two of whom I had worked with elsewhere and respected highly for their ultra-professional work.

As for the defence that ‘the teachers terminated were those with serious issues of NOT teaching their courses ... showing videos and allowing the students to cheat blatantly’, if this was the case, why were they never charged with it, and why were they never given the opportunity to defend themselves, rather than being sent off mid-contract with no reasons given? After all, these were teachers who had worked in the HCT system for up to 15 years and more, with no previous issues.

So what is my personal opinion of this supervisor? – I would prefer not to commit myself on this. However, of this I am sure: although others may have stated that there are ‘teachers who think the new supervisor is doing a good job trying to fix a terrible mess that wasn't caused by her’, I personally know of none.

It's pretty much accepted among those who work/ed on the Military Language Program that a combination of TWO people brought it to its current utterly lamentable state.

There's no doubt Amy did enormous harm out at the various military bases (before she was banned from entering them by the very people she was hired to help) and yet, even when the ax was swinging last summer cutting off the heads of Associate Deans and the like, she survived without getting her head chopped off. The mystery as to why and how this is the case remains just that, a mystery. Especially given that some people, myself included, were dismissed from HCT for no perceptible reason

However, into the mix must also be added the (now ex) supervisor of the HCT college based MLP programs. The short Louisianian. He sold his team up the river in a heartbeat after taking the job and was instrumental in using teachers of great standing and high regard as pawns in his game of kiss-ass. And the utterly woeful 'teachers' he hired (several with no teaching qualifications) during his thankfully brief tenure have done much to drag the MLP into even further disrepute. To the point now where everyone on the MLP is utterly disheartened and aware that doing a good job counts for nothing. All that ever counted was kissing his backside.

To the anonymous poster who stated 'The staff who are still there are scared stiff to say or do anything for fear that they too might lose their jobs...' I might add, there were a few, a very few, who stood up and said 'No'. They paid a price for what they did but, they gained a lot more in return. The knowledge, the day the Louisianian got unceremoniously demoted (and very nearly kicked out), that they were right all along.

Yes, Amy has created enormous problems. But, she's not the only cause of the problems.

Ahhh...the "short Louisianian" who is all ett up with "short shit disease" is none other than Trace(y) Manuel. He worked VERY HARD at standing on my shoulders in his single-minded attempt to climb to the top. However, when I flicked him off like a flea, he became ENRAGED! It was a great joy of mine when, after I had escaped his menacing ways, I again, slipped through his fingers!

He was favored by the military students as he always just taught the military component of the curriculum as the self-styled "military expert" who used to let the students surf the net while he read the newspaper. Seriously, "Platoon & Campaign" are for the brain-dead, yet this education expert was the only one who was "qualified" to teach it.

Got it, Poodle? Trace Manual not even the mere shadow of a professional or competency-based instructor.

It must be said, though, that there were some (a VERY small handful of) very nice people who were there as well such at the Yank with the Turkish wife and the Tunisian lady.

incompetent supervisors that ass kiss and try to use instructors to pursue their own agendas are par for the course. instructors on 28 hours or 30plus hours are common. Complain and you are out. Try the latest at ADMC - mass sackings with faculty being informed by a new director that didn't know them. Reasons for being sacked? "your department is going in a different direction" and " you have already had contract renewals in the past so your time is finished." Took place Just last week, so - Happy Christmas!

Surprisingly, this is something that they don't include on the recruitment adverts - the fact that they can (and do) dismiss good faculty members for the most feeble of reasons. Or for no reason at all!

Well, not quite correct, Anonymous, but thanks for your uninformed opinion anyway. In fact, there aee many reasons for teachers taking a job in the UAE.

Firstly, there's the money - neven heard of that little motivator? Sometimes the tax-free salary offered is better than the money on offer at home, so it makes sense to give it a try.

Secondly, the higher and further education sectors in the West are experiencing a period of contraction, whereas in the Gulf countries there appears to be expansion. So, it makes sense to go where (more) jobs are available.

There are other reasons, but I won't worry your sweet little pinhead with them. And I'm sure you're already composing a witty response in that head right now, so I won't block the flashing of braincells!

I think somebody has forgotten the 'lifestyle' argument too, which is kinda related to the weather.
Coming originally from Canada, as I do, the prospect of year-round sun and access to a beach and swimming pool is a major attraction.
The downside, of course, is the awful HCT managers, but I can take it!

Where I live in the West, we do not have to worry about fleas; we are free to express our opinions, change jobs etc.. etc.. and still get our gratuities promptly paid to our bank accounts. Those of us who are well qualified have no need to seek employment in those desert kingdoms, and bow to the managers- particularly the imported Western infidels who collude with their towel-headed masters; hence I have no experience of being treated as mere dust. BTW, I have never visited any of these desert paradise kingdoms, and it follows that I will never visit your wonderful desert kingdom. I am very happy living in the West.

@Delma. If you have such positive experience in that desert kingdom, what are you doing here? Why can't you start a blog called " HCT Thrives!"? That should please your masters there, and see you getting an additional fist full of Dollars!! BTW, you should be missing your polar and grizzly bears! They are reincarnated as your managers?

It is a place that takes about one year to recover from. Best if one can lounge around on the beach and just forget it all and then recovery is possible. But it will probably always hold a kind of morbid fascination for those that once experienced it!

Word has it he's installed a 'security system' in the CERT offices at AD that requires users to have their palm prints scanned before allowing entry into the building. Or, put another way, it's a fortress which allows only the chosen entry inside. Oh, and this system was installed by a security company where he is a major partner. The show must go on folks!

I wonder if he got his gratuity. That alone would run into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I think I'll contact the Infernal Revenue Service and tell them to be on the look out for how he tries to smuggle the money in without reporting it. It would go a long way to paying off the USA national debt.

Alas, another interesting chapter in this notorious, trouble-ridden institution… …a year or so, down the line, the picture has progressed from bizarre to downright diabolical. HCT sends in their “best” supervisor to clean up the mess left by her disgraced predecessor. Or could it be, drops her at KBZ, the dumping place for no longer wanted HCT employees, having left the company in a somewhat “strange” manner?
Mrs. Hyde is clearly in the business of protecting her own position, and hellbent on escaping the fate of her predecessor.
Relieving teachers from teaching to perform administrative duties: Being denied the resources of the main campus, she opts to utilize teachers to perform duties that would otherwise be performed by administrative staff at HCT. In return, these teachers are given LOW or NO work hours, vastly in contrast to the 20-hour work week the contract between HCT and the military entails.
Assigning incompetent, weak ones to team leader duties: These are often “system rejects” who luckily got picked up in the HCT system, and will no doubt rush to her defense
The weekly schedule sports huge discrepancies in hours, regardless of HCT’s clearly stipulated 20-hour weekly workload.
Some, being non-renewed teachers from other campuses (# dead weight picked up in the system), has reputations for trouble making to match. Her strategy to appease them, and protect her own position, is to put these half-wits in charge of the competent teachers (who are actually teaching), and a failure-proof recipe for disaster and job dissatisfaction ensues.
Failing to get the lack of proper dress code under control, some of the female staff is an embarrassment to the profession. Properly dressed faculty is frequently admonished along with the culprits in polite, but clearly ineffective, emails.
With the looming threat of Emiratization, the new supervisor is in the precarious position of being disposable, and very likely to be replaced, as has happened recently to other hot shots with in HCT. Absolute power corrupts, and without the watchful eye of an immediate superior, she is in the business of protecting her position. She plays the popularity card, doesn’t address serious issues as she has to keep the favor of her teachers, especially those with “trouble-making” potential. Dishing out positions to any faculty members who might pose a problem to her, she cuts a sad and pathetic figure of desperation.
BOGUS OVERTIME CLAIMS: Allowing teachers to earn “overtime” at HCT Proper, although they had worked less than 20hours weekly at KBZAC. Faculty load tracking sheets should reflect this clearly, although they might be “adjusted”
Flagrant favoritism: Supports those who never speak up about her shortcomings, or the numerous shortcomings in her management style. Those who do speak up have their jobs sabotaged, gets blocked in the system, yes, and the Iron Lady does not hesitate to use her contacts within the system to block and sabotage current jobs, or those aspiring to work at HCT. Rumor has it that applications will go as far as an actual contract being issued, until she is contacted.

It all gets too bizarre to contemplate. As is with any situation of unadulterated unfairness and unethicalness, the rest of the teaching faculty is disgruntled but has no forum to address their concerns. They go through the motions, but are deeply disillusioned with their new quick fix boss. Time alone will tell how this will play out

Some alarming allegations against the “meek and friendly “ Valerie McGrath. Her cronies are certainly not rushing to her defense in spite of the so-called high popularity. But then again, in the Middle East you shut up if you want to hold on to your job, and don’t underestimate the power of that ill-earned overtime dough #hush money. Sources inform that the supervisor’s reaction to the bogus overtime claims was: Schedule is not posted on HCT portal, HCT has no way to check the schedules and find out the true hours. Therefore, by approving bogus overtime claims, she is draining the resources of a company rumored to be millions in the red. If she is indeed blocking applications in the system, that the corruption is wider as her contacts in HR are playing along. She has ruined the livelihood of many a good teacher, and managed to hold on to non-threatening weaker ones. This implies that the fiber of teaching faculty in the company is taking a blow. However, she has not been the only supervisor known to use personal vendettas to block applications in the system, the likes of Jon Orthmann, Adam Bogg, even Maria Mcguire, (sent packing ,Alhamdillilah), have all been trigger-happy before. Clearly this woman is unscrupulous, unethical, dishonest, and abuses her power as supervisor. She may be getting away with her ill practices for now, but karma is a bitch when you are, and as the old adage goes, what goes around, surely comes around.
